The Science Behind Trauma and the Art of Healing Relationships

Trauma without intervention affects our physical, neurological and emotional lives, perpetuating cycles of violence, addiction and pain.  Explore recent breakthroughs in our knowledge of healing and how we as a community can forever break the chain. Hosted by Emily Cummins Polk, a project leader with JUNTOS/Community Partners. With: Cathy Salser, award-winning art activist, founder of A Window Between Worlds; Ruth Beaglehole, founder of Echo Parenting and Education, author of Mama, Listen! Raising a Child Without Violence; Naama Haviv, Executive Director of Panzi Foundation, USA.

Ruth Beaglehole

Ruth Beaglehole, founder of Echo Parenting and Education, a non-profit dedicated to breaking the cycle of early family violence, has been a preschool/parent educator for 50+ years. Author of Mama, Listen! Raising a Child Without Violence-A Handbook for Teen Parents, she is an international (New Zealand, India, Congo/DRC) trainer in nonviolent child-raising and a member of the leadership team of the Magnolia Place Initiative in Los Angeles.

Naama Haviv

Naama Haviv, Executive Director of Panzi Foundation, USA, is a leader in the fight against genocide and mass atrocities, currently with a special focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo. She has had a long career in human rights advocacy and relief, development and educational programs in Africa and Asia, working with many groups, including Jewish World Watch, Relief International, and the Institute for the Study of Genocide.

Emily Cummins Polk

Emily Cummins Polk, who has provided school-based services to children and families in Los Angeles’ Lennox District 14 for a decade, is founder and Program Director of JUNTOS, a school-based wellness center serving students, families, community members and staff with a focus on trauma informed care. Emily also serves on the Trauma Informed Task Force of Greater Los Angeles.

Cathy Salser

Cathy Salser, an award-winning art activist, founded A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) in 1991 to foster the use of art in making a positive difference in the lives of those impacted by violence and trauma. Today AWBW partners with over 300 community sites providing art workshops to adults and children.
